The GirlAlive Blog A Blog About a Girl Who is Alive. 2010-03-02T15:21:48Z WordPress http://girlalive.com/blog1/feed/atom/ girlalive http:// <![CDATA[Actual Productivity]]> http://girlalive.com/blog1/?p=546 2010-03-02T15:21:48Z 2010-03-02T15:21:48Z I have actually been fairly busy today. I manage to accomplish things when I haul my butt out of bed before 11:00.

First, I fished a piece of hay out of Spike’s eye that was so huge I have no clue how he managed to get it into his eye in the first place. His eye is still clouded over, but we’re going to see how he does over the next couple days now that the hay is out.

Huge piece of hay in Spikey Piggy's eye.

Then I applied for a bunch of jobs. I love that being unemployed has allowed me the time to read the entire Harry Potter series. Twice. But I’d really like to have less free time and more money now.

I downloaded 5 episodes of The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien and watched 2. I deleted my Myspace account.

I’m on a bit of a roll with the productivity, so I might do something kooky like actually cooking food for dinner. Or baking bread or something.

He said, “You don’t boo the next batter up just because the last batter struck out.” Really? Let’s look at a replay and see how that game really went.

(Sorry, dad, but Jay keeps digging himself deeper and acting like an ass.)

girlalive http:// <![CDATA[FYI – Twitpic sucks]]> http://girlalive.com/blog1/?p=525 2010-03-01T16:29:02Z 2010-02-26T22:29:22Z If you are on the Twitter like me, and you follow celebrities, you know that they like to take pictures and post them. Unfortunately, nearly all of them use an application called TwitPic. It sucks. For weeks and months at a time, whenever I click on a twitpic link, this is all I get:

page load error

Page Load Error

I originally twittered to @twitpic whenever this happened, since their own web site was invariably a Page Load Error. It would work sporadically for a week or two, then die again.

New strategy. Whenever someone posts a twitpic and it is broken, I am replying to that tweet with all my anguish over the fact that I can’t see the picture. Please, people, stop using twitpic. Working perfectly 12% of the time is not nearly good enough. There are plenty of other twitter picture posting options. Use YFrog. Use tweetphoto. Anything else. Just please stop using Twitpic. IT DOESN’T WORK.

Everytime you post a twitpic, God kills a puppy.

Alana

P.S. If you want to join me in this fight against stuff that doesn’t work right, here is a besmallened link for this blog post so that you can tell other twitterers that everytime they post a broken twitpic, God kills a puppy. http://bit.ly/c23xCS

girlalive http:// <![CDATA[Debating socialism in America.]]> http://girlalive.com/blog1/?p=522 2010-03-01T16:29:25Z 2010-02-25T14:00:44Z I’ve heard that there are people in the US protesting the idea of the government being involved in health care. They think that the National Health Service in the UK is terrible and socialist.

No NHS

But if you don’t want the government involved in healthcare, how do you support so much of the socialism and government control that already exists in America?

If you don’t want government healthcare, why do you put up with public, government run libraries? Free books for everyone? How is that capitalist? Privatize libraries and keep knowledge and information in the hands of the rich.

Private library

And what about firefighting? Back in the good old days, there were dozens of competing fire departments in each town, and they only put out fires for people who had paid for fire insurance from their company. If you didn’t pay, your family burned. Isn’t that a more capitalist way to do things? If you don’t have money, why should the rest of us pay to stop your house from burning?

Private firefighting

The worst of all is public schools. Why should the government be deciding what your children learn? That’s why there are still private schools. But people who send their kids to private schools are still forced to pay taxes supporting public schools. And people without kids have to pay to educate other people’s children. If you can’t afford to educate children, you shouldn’t have children. Isn’t that more capitalist? I mean, it is extreme socialism to offer equal education to all children. If you’re against public healthcare, you should be equally petitioning to privatize all schools.

private school

If you’re against socialist health care, why aren’t you protesting the other marks of socialism in America? You fight against equal healthcare, but you tolerate equal libraries, schools, police, firefighters, and roads for everyone. Seems hypocritical to me.

girlalive http:// <![CDATA[Drawings – no, really.]]> http://girlalive.com/blog1/?p=519 2010-03-01T16:31:00Z 2010-02-23T15:17:50Z I’ve been bored and disgruntled with being unemployed, so I decided it was time to break out the wireless drawing tablet that I suck at using and do a couple drawings. Maybe more will follow later. Maybe not. I make no promises.

Horlicks drawing

In other news, there is no other news. I am still unemployed and cold. We’re getting closer to deciding where and when to move to the US. It’ll still be a ways off, since we first have to fix up this house to a point where we can sell it. Before we can do that I need to have money, which means I need a job.

girlalive http:// <![CDATA[Happy Valentine’s Day]]> http://girlalive.com/blog1/?p=516 2010-03-01T16:32:19Z 2010-02-13T22:46:56Z A while ago my husband asked if I wanted to do anything in particular for Valentine’s Day. I told him, “Since it’s an entirely invented holiday, I’m not too fussed about it.” And it’s true. I don’t really care about Valentine’s Day. It doesn’t mean anything. I spent about £3 on a present for husband and I will make him a cheesecake he requested. But even that much isn’t entirely necessary as far as I’m concerned. So if you’re single and have no one on Valentine’s Day, feel free to ignore it as much as I do. It doesn’t matter.

I saw part of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics here, but not when it was aired. It was on at 1:45am here. The one thing I didn’t want to see was the tragic death of the Georgian athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili. When I saw the video footage they showed him flying off his sled and into the air, and then cut away. But I’ve heard what NBC did. They showed every moment of it in slow motion. Three times. If I didn’t hate NBC because of Conan, I definitely hate NBC now. There are a few shows on NBC that I like (The Office and 30 Rock), but I can live without them for the sake of boycotting NBC. I will not watch any NBC shows until Jeff Zucker and Dick Ebersol (the head of NBC sports programming) are fired. And I’m not the only one.

It you hate what Jeff Zucker did to Conan, join I’m With Coco on Facebook. And if you hate what Dick Ebersol did to Nodar Kumaritashvili’s loved ones, join Another disgrace at the hands of NBC on Facebook.

Also I found out that there is a fan group for this web site on Facebook. Weird. I had no idea.

Anyway, enjoy your made-up holiday or whatever.
